A somber atmosphere enveloped the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, as a second-year Master of Technology (MTech) student, Vikas Meena, allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday night. The 31-year-old aerospace engineering student was found hanging in his hostel room by fellow students who raised the alarm due to prolonged inactivity and a locked door. Institute authorities were notified, prompting them to contact the police.
Kalyanpur station house officer Dhananjay Pandey stated that upon receiving the information late on Wednesday night, the police dispatched a team to the scene, taking custody of Meena's body. Hailing from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, the student reportedly ended his life after facing academic challenges, failing to clear exams in three attempts and subsequently facing termination from IIT Kanpur. The institute, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of the academically bright student and highlighted the ongoing collaboration with law enforcement to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
